Brooklyn has 42 District Leaders – two in each Assembly District – that make up the Executive Committee, the top leadership body of the Brooklyn Democratic Party. On the primary ballot, District Leaders are called State Committee members, because they also serve on the New York Democratic Committee.

District Leaders play a major role in choosing judges, staffing the NYC Board of Elections, and writing the rules governing our local party. They also elect the Party Chair (aka Party Boss), who determines party priorities and spending.

All 42 District Leaders in Brooklyn are up for election every even-numbered year in the June Democratic Primary. But many voters have never heard of their District Leaders, both because they don’t appear on the ballot if no one challenges them and because many stick to the bare minimum of tasks required of them and don’t engage with the district beyond that.

Mike wants to change this in Assembly District 57! He believes that the role of District Leader can be so much more than the bare minimum. He wants to use the position to meaningfully engage with his community, serving as a liaison between his neighbors and the Brooklyn Democratic Party to make sure they are included and empowered in the democratic process.

He is also committed to making the party more transparent and accountable to the Democrats in his district and increasing civic engagement through voter education and participation events. Mike will work together with everyone from elected officials to community leaders – and most importantly his neighbors in the district – to create a Brooklyn Democratic Party that works for all of us, not just a select few.
